Explaining how to interpret cards and other actions

A bunch of ideas I got for the UI as soon as I took a break.

Threat areas (the orange lines) were both unpleasant to look at and hard to understand. I added a simple texture to the ground, gave threat areas more muted colors, increased the spacing between their lines, and made threat of the hovered character thicker in addition to shifting it up. The goal is that you can hover a character to see their threat, but also see whether there are any other characters who are also covering that area. Not completely happy with it, but I think it’s better.

Threat areas of characters with no reactions left are now fully hidden unless the character is hovered. When hovered, they’re dotted lines instead of full ones.

Made info about the hovered action appear near the mouse instead of at the top of the screen, so it’s easier to look through a character’s actions.

Made that info box brownish red when the action is unavailable, instead of hiding it.

Made targeting range on the boss’s cards and actions always black. Previously they were the same colors as the player’s actions (colors indicate what kind of thing they can target), but that’s a lot to learn.

Instead, it should be enough to know:

- Actions can target anything they could do something useful against.

- If an effect of an action tries to move the boss and fails, the action ends early. E.g. Step Cleave, Lunge, and Lance all begin with movement, and then attack/debuff. He won’t get the later effects if there’s no empty space to move to.

Added a little picture of the boss to card art so it’s more obvious how card art relates to the ranges of the player’s actions.

Added a system to automatically calculate framing of the card art, so nothing important ends up off-screen.

Made it so Step Cleave and Reach Cleave say “Area” instead of “Foes in AOE”.

Characters now emit little + particles when they regain health.
